One of the first marriages in the Newaygo County area, which was part of Kent County at the time, was Sylvanus Reed and Harriet Barnhard who were married on the 3rd. of June 1849.
The first recorded marriage in Newaygo County was filed April 10, 1852, but occurred Oct.2, 1851. The certificate reads as follows: “This is to certify that John Beck and Phiarm Luther both of the county of Newaygo, were married by me, a minister of the M. E. Church, on the 2nd. day of October, 1851, in the presence of James P. Berry and Sarah Berry.” “David Culp” The second marriage occurred Dec. 4, 1851 and was performed for William H. Tubbs and Laura M. Bonney. Dec. 15, 1851, David M. Cooley and Abyssinia Miller were joined in matrimony. These three first marriages were performed by Rev. David Culp, of the Methodist Episcopal denomination. In 1852, four couples were married; March 18, Cornelius Slaght, Jr. and Nancy Ann Lace, by Rev. David Culp; April 13, Fenton Taylor and Julia Swain, by William Barton, Justice of the Peace; and Sept. 30, Leonard Hetter and Rebecca Gauweiler, by Jacob Barnhart, Justice of the Peace; Jacob H. Terwillegar and Mary Jane Eaves on the 12th. of December. In 1853, ten marriages were solemnized within the limits of Newaygo County, they were: Frederick G. Betts and Salome Griffin, Hiram Blakesley and Mary Jane McDonald, Seth Chapin and Sarah M. McCune, Jonas Culp and Mary Emens, Ambrose Hall and Fanny (O) Ostrinn (Strinn), William King and Sarah Philena Luther, Jonathan Oatley and Lydia L. Surrarea. Charles Seaman and Adleade Betts, Henry Stone and Mrs. Mary B. Southland, and William Whaley and Ellen Alverson. The first marriage in the Fremont area was on May 27, 1855, in the “old log house of Daniel Weaver”. Thaddeus L. Waters and Laura J. Weaver were joined in wedlock, by Squire Furman, of Newaygo. They were first couple ever married this side of the town of Newaygo in Newaygo County. |
| Often, in the 1860s and 1870s, marriages were performed by the local Justice of the Peace. After recording the marriage in his book the justice was supposed to send a copy to the county clerk where it would be recorded in the county records, but this was not always done. An asterisk by the groom's name indicates that the marriage was never recorded with the county clerk's office. Should anyone come across an old record book it is recommended that the information be shared with your local historical society to aid other family researchers. |
