Otia Post Office was established on Feb. 20th., 1882. This was a large Lumbering Camp along the Chicago and West Michigan Railroad. The post office was named after Otia Gibbs, a daughter of James M. Gibbs, who operated a mill there. Otia has had three names, it was called Otia during two periods but finished with the name of Brohman. Jarret Dingman was the first Postmaster with the post office in his store in 1882. In 1883 the post office name was change to Dingman. On Jan. 20th. ,1885 the name was change back to Otia. On May 15th, 1920. The other Postmasters of the first Otia Post Office were: James M. Gibbs 1882 and Thomas J. Sherlock 1883. When the name changed to Dingman the Postmasters were: Thomas Sherlock 1883 and Annie A. Sherlock 1884. After the name changed back to Otia the Postmasters were: Annie A. Sherlock 1885, Harvey C. Pierce 1890, Anna A. Definey 1890, Anna A. McPherson 1892, Philo Bowerman 1896, John H. Murray 1897 and Wm. C. Cantrell in 1914. In 1920 the name was change again to Brohman with Wm. C. Cantrell still as Postmaster. Follow by Edwin W. Cantrell in 1923, William C Cantrell in 1931 and Fred R. Stone in 1931 as Postmasters. The Brohman Post Office is still in operation today, with a ZIP Code of 49312. |
