Simon Barnhard was born March 23, 1788 in Pennsylvania to Jacob and Anna Maria "Miller" Barnhard. Simon was the tenth
child in this family. His father and all ten children were baptized on January 11, 1790 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset County,
Pennsylvania. This family had moved to Fairfield County, Ohio by 1805.
Simon married Sarah Cole, daughter of Thomas Cole and Elizabeth Stephenson in Fairfield County, Ohio on
January 5, 1808. They lived in Pickaway and Sandusky Counties in Ohio before moving to the Fremont Area in the 1850's.
Simon Barnhard owned 160 acres of land in Section 29 of Range 6, Washington Township, Sandusky County, Ohio in 1840.
On November 8, 1855, he bought the E ½ of the SW 1/4 of Section 4 of Dayton Township, Newaygo County, Michigan which
he then sold to Spencer Wilder on November 4, 1863.
Simon and Sarah had 12 children, who were all born in Ohio and all married in Ohio except for Harriet Barnhard who married
Sylvanus Reed in the first marriage in Newaygo County on June 3, 1849. The married children who moved to this area were
Jacob Barnhard, Elizabeth "Barnhard" Wilson, Margaret "Barnhard" Preston, Sarah "Barnhard" Berry and Simon Barnhard Jr.
Simon died July 2, 1872 in Dayton Township and Sarah died April 16, 1872 in Dayton Township. They are buried in Bull Cemetery
in Newaygo County by the eastern boundary. Although Simon Barnhard is listed on census records as a farmer, he worked most
of his life clearing new farms and as a lumberman.
The children of Simon and Sarah that we have information on are:
1. Jacob Barnhard born on Sept.29, 1809 and died Feb. 2, 1888 who married 1. Sarah Hyland in March 1832 and 2. Lucinda Reed on June 21, 1840
2. Elizabeth 'Betsy' Barnhard born circa. 1811 who married Theodore Wilson.
3. Margaret Barnhard born Feb.19, 1816 and died Oct.30, 1886 who married William Preston on Oct.29, 1835
4. Sarah Barnhard born Feb 7, 1818 who married James P. Berry on Jan.21, 1837. "James P. Berry was the first sheriff of Newaygo County, MI."
5. Mary Ann Barnhard born 1820 and died in 1892 in Ottawa County, Ohio. She married Lee Ames May 7, 1839 in Sandusky County and remained in Ohio.
6. Simon Barnhard (Jr.) born July 3, 1824 and died May 20, 1903. Simon married Nancy Lindsley on April 16, 1846.
7. Harriet Barnhard born in Sept. 1829 and died after 1910. Married Sylvanus Reed on June 3, 1849 in the first marriage in Newaygo County.
8. Athaliah Barnhard married David Snyder on April 30, 1846 and remained in Ohio.
9. Thomas Barnhard died young and buried in Ohio.
