Simon Barnhard, son of Simon Barnhard and Sarah (Cole) Barnhard was born on July 3, 1824 in Ohio. He married Nancy Ann Lindsley on April 16, 1846 in Ottawa County, Ohio. Nancy died June 30, 1872 and Simon died May 20, 1903. They are both buried in the Bull Cemetery, Newaygo County, Michigan.
Several of Simon's brothers and sisters and their families had settled in the Croton area on the Maringo Prairie in 1849. These families came from the Sandusky and Ottawa County area of Ohio to Chicago where they stayed for a few months until they arranged passage by schooner to Muskegon. They hired Indian guides in Muskegon to take them by canoe to Croton. The men worked in the lumber camps.
In 1855 most of the Barnhard families bought land in Dayton Township and cleared it for farms. Simon moved his family to Dayton Township but continued to work in the lumber industry.
Simon and Nancy had 13 children but we have no data for two of them who may have died young.
1. Elizabeth Barnhard born in 1847 in Ohio and died before 1870. Married Sylvester Stanley on Aug.14, 1862 in Newaygo Co., MI.
2. Sarah Barnhard born in 1849? MI. Married Charles Warren in 1870? Sarah died in 1872 and is buried on her parent's lot in Bull Cemetery, Denver Two., Newaygo Co.
3. Harriet Barnhard born in 1851 in MI.
4. Solomon Barnhard born Dec.31, 1852 in MI and died April 24, 1931, Garfield Township, Newaygo Co., MI. Buried in Bull Cemetery on parent's lot. Solomon married Sarah M. Briggs on Dec.31, 1871 in Denver Township, Newaygo Co., MI. Sarah is buried in North Dakota.
5. Mary Ann Barnhard born April 6, 1855 in MI. and died March 30, 1930 at Aetna, Newaygo Co. MI. Married Waller Carney on Oct.1,1872 in Fremont.
6. William J. Barnhard born 1857 in MI. and died June 18, 1923 in Muskegon, MI. Married Martha Jane Wilson on April 24, 1879 in Newaygo. Second marriage to Ida "Laraby" Thebo on Nov.10, 1907 in Lincoln Township, Newaygo County, MI.
7. Alice Barnhard born July 13, 1859 in Dayton Township, Newaygo County and died April 28, 1930 in Fremont. Buried in Bull Cemetery. Married first John Hendrie on Jan.21, 1874 in Denver Township and second Norman Lock on Dec.23, 1908 in Newaygo, MI.
8. Charles J. Barnhard born 1861, MI. and died 1945 in Lincoln Township, Newaygo Co. Married Mary Jane DeHaven on Oct. 8, 1882 in Hesperia, MI.
9. Nancy Barnhard born 1864 in MI. Believe Nancy went to California.
10. Francis H. Barnhard born Nov 10, 1866 in Lincoln Township, Newaygo Co., and died Oct. 2, 1947 in Fruitport. Buried in E. Hesperia Cemetery, Hesperia, MI. Married first Matilda Popps on July 27, 1887 and second Ida "Laraby" "Thebo" Barnhard on April 22, 1933 in White Cloud, MI.
11. George Barnhard born May 14, 1868 in Denver Township, MI and died Oct 3, 1947 in Fremont and buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Fremont. Married first Amy A Marshall on Nov. 16, 1910 in White Cloud, MI. and second May A. "Hubbard" Morrison on Aug. 22, 1918 in Muskegon, MI.
