James Kinneyy
Born 24 Jun 1845, Roscommon, Ireland, died 13 Feb 1937, Ensley Center. James Kinney was born at Castlerea, County Roscommon, Ireland, the son of John and Mary McCue Kinney. He married Mary Ann Quinn on 20 Apr 1876. Their first child, Margaret Anna, died at 4 years of age after eating matches, per the Newaygo Republican dated 2 March 1881, and was the first burial in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Ensley. James wrote a sketch of the journey from Ireland to Baltimore, Maryland with his mother and siblings (the father and oldest brother Thomas having emigrated a year earlier and working as indentured servants in order to bring the family to America): "After two weeks waiting in Liverpool, we sailed on a sail vessel to Baltimore, Maryland. After being out on the ocean more than a week, we met a storm and it drove us back in sight of Williamston, Ireland. Sailors nailed all hatches and had to go to the rigging. Over three hundred passengers besides the ships crew were aboard the vessel. We had eleven deaths while coming to Baltimore across the Atlantic Ocean. We were eleven weeks and three days making the voyage from Liverpool to Baltimore." The vessel, "Sailor's Bridge," sank on its return trip. One of the eleven that did not survive the voyage was Martin Kinney, brother to James. This trip was made in 1849.

Mary McCue Kinney
Born 1814, Roscommon, Ireland, died 16 July 1891, Ensley Center. Mary McCue married John Kinney in Ireland ca 1830. In 1848, the second successive year of famine due to the blighted potato crop, he took their eldest son, Thomas, and sailed for America. They worked as indentured servants on a plantation near Baltimore and sent money a year later for Mary and the remaining five children to sail from Liverpool to Baltimore on a coffin ship, "Sailor's Bridge." Eleven passengers died during the voyage, one of them being Martin Kinney, one of John and Mary's children. The ship arrived in Baltimore on Christmas eve, 1849. The vessel sank on its return to England. For more info, refer to James Kinney's account of this trip under his entry. They located on the SW 1/4 of section 9 in what is now Ensley Twp. in the fall of 1856. At the time, this was solid wilderness and was a part of Croton Twp.

Geert was killed by lightening in Germany, his wife & their 7 children came to America. 4 of the children lived & raised families in Newaygo County, 3 children raised their families in Ottawa County area. The mother, Harmtje, stayed with several of her children, but died in Ottawa County at her son's home. We can only guess when this photo was taken, but we guess it was taken around 1840 or before.
